Softwares & Applications

What means Open Source and what makes it so diferent of traditional Computer Systems?

In 1998, a group of individuals advocated that the term "Free Software" be replaced by Open-Source Software (OSS) as an expression which is less ambiguous and more comfortable for the corporate world. Software developers may want to publish their software with an open-source software license, so that anybody may also develop the same software or understand how it works. Open-source software generally allows anybody to make a new version of the software, port it to new operating systems and processor architectures, share it with others or market it. The aim of open source is to let the product be more understandable, modifiable, duplicatable, reliable or simply accessible, while it is still marketable.

The Open Source Definition, notably, presents an open-source philosophy, and further defines a boundary on the usage, modification and redistribution of open-source software. Software licenses grant rights to users which would otherwise be prohibited by copyright. These include rights on usage, modification and redistribution. Several open-source software licenses have qualified within the boundary of the Open Source Definition. The most prominent example is the popular GNU General Public License (GPL). While open source presents a way to broadly make the sources of a product publicly accessible, the open-source licenses allow the authors to fine tune such access.

Voice Over IP

Voice over Internet Protocol, also called VoIP, IP telephony, internet telephony, broadband telephony, broadband phone and voice over broadband are the routing of voice conversations over the internet or through any other IP-based network.

Many people are hearing for the first time about VoIP. VoIP, or voice over internet protocol. It is a method of talking on the phone through the use of the internet. It works by taking analog audio signals and turn them into digital data which can then be transmitted over the web. Sounds confusing? Really, it is simple and very interesting. This technology has been developed and used extensively. Today, more and more people are switching their long distance service away from traditional means and focusing them on VoIP simply because it offers high quality and, get ready for this, affordable prices!

In effect, it allows you to get free phone calls through your internet connection. In fact, you can use VoIP instead of using any of the phone company products and therefore you do not have to pay them for what you can get for free using VoIP. Sounds great, doesn't it?

We from FIRST Corporation are specialized to provide you this technology. We are using it ourselves. Having DSL at home, the management can be connected like internal extensions and utilize at any times the indeed priceless services, such system offers. Interested? You should be - unless you are already connected!

Training & Transfer of Technology

Training

Training technology is a body of tools used in delivering information and skill-development exercises for the purpose of improving performance. It is typically delivered live or created for distribution later, as it is needed. Training technologies can assist in delivering both. Older technologies might include a blackboard and chalk or whiteboard, a filmstrip, slide projector or overhead projector. In our fast developing world, this may not always suffice the requirements anymore.

Aside of practical training at site, newer technologies might include web conferencing, html-formatted content, posting PowerPoint, .pdf or Flash files to websites for anytime downloading, blogs and podcasts. Some of the newer training technologies encourage viewer interaction and addition as in posting a comment to a learning-oriented blog, or making an edit or addition to a script at the other end of the world.

In consideraion of future requirements, FIRST CORPORATION offers training and sponsored programmes to aspiring
young IT-experts.

Technology Transfer

Technology transfer is the process of developing practical applications for the result of, mostly, scientific research. While conceptually the activity has been practised for many years (in ancient times, Archimedes was notable for applying science to solve practical problems), the present-day volume of research has led to a focus on the process itself.

Many companies, universities, governmental and non-governmental organizations now have an "Office of Technology Transfer" dedicated to identifying research results of potential commercial interests, and to developing strategies for how to exploit it. For instance, a research result may be of interest, but patents are normally only issued for practical processes, and so someone, not necessarily the researchers, must come up with a specific practical process that depends on the result. Another consideration is the commercial value; for instance, while there are many ways to accomplish nuclear fusion in practice, the ones of commercial interest are those that generate more energy than they require to operate, and, at the end of the day, money. As a result, technology transfer organizations are often multidisciplinary, including economists, engineers, lawyers, marketers and scientists.

The dynamics of the technology transfer process has attracted attention in its own right, and there are several dedicated societies and journals.

Filipinio International Resources, Science & Technologies (FIRST Corp.) Corporation is one of those corporations which has written technlogy transfer on its colors. We have done so essentially in the past and will continue with it in the future, especially in the frame of simulation and monitoring technologies.

Surveillance Systems

A Vessel Traffic Service (VTS) was initially a marine traffic monitoring system established by harbor or port authorities, similar to air traffic control for aircraft. Typical VTS systems use radar, closed-circuit television, meteorological sensors, VHF radiotelephony and AIS (Automatic Identification Systems) to keep track of vessel movements and provide navigational safety in a (formerly) limited geographical area. It may, by means of additional technological applications, at the same time, serve as specialized monitoring and surveillance installation collecting and distributing unlimited amounts of data as required.
